I am very excited about having vacations again! I usually go to Lima, Peru, but this time I will stay in Texas. Actually, I had plans to go to Italy with some of my friends (they departed yesterday... I took them to the airport) and take a lot of tours and visit many cities... but it is not going to happen... :( Still, I will try to have a great time.

Resolutions for 2010!!!

A new year is a new and a fresh start! 2009 is over and we learned so many things and we lived all kinds of experiences, some of them great and some of them not very positive, but still useful. We know a little more and better than a year ago and we can take better decisions based on those experiences.

As a tradition, people like to make diverse promises when a new year is born. Those are called 'resolutions'. Personally, I (Mr. Carpio) do that during the first hours of my birthday (April 11... start saving some money for my presents, guys), but, in order to participate with you, I will join you and share some of my resolutions for 2011... I mean, 2010!

Soooooooooooo... go ahead and tell me about your GOOD purposes for this new year.

What did you do during the Thanksgiving break?

Breaks are always nice, aren't they? Some free time allows us doing several productive things that we normally can do only on weekends. In addition, it is an excellent oportunity to spend more time with our families.

Some people - like me - love travelling and try to leave town and visit different places (I didn't go anywhere this time just because I am planning on going to Peru in January... more details coming later).

Others enjoy waking up late and staying at home.

Many others use the time to go shopping, especially now because the holidays are so close. I heard that some persons (mainly girls) can be at the mall many times during the same week. Do you think that is true, guys? I refuse to believe...
I will share with you later what I did during the Thanksgiving break (you already know, but it is more fun when you write it). I'll tell you about my lazy days at home (always with a good book, of course), all the restaurants I visited (Greek food, Indian food, Thai food, YUMMY!), and my crazy Black Friday.

Last week the Fantastic 4th Graders participated in a super cool lesson directed by our awesome friend Ms. Dixson in the cafeteria. She shared many of her personal thoughs and hobbies and ideas with us in a Circle Map. Then, she took those details about herself and started writing a poem. She called it 'My Writing Territories'.

Living in the United States, I learned that there are so many important sports and people cheer for different ones. If you live in the East Coast, baseball is really huge: the most important teams are the Yankees and the Red Socks.

In the West Coast and the center, however, basketball and football are bigger. Here in Texas, people die for football because of the Dallas Cowboys, who won many tournaments (including the SuperBowl) in the past.

Basketball has many followers. We like the Mavericks, the Rockets and the Spurs (of course, we prefer the Mavericks here).

The hockey team is called the 'Stars'.

Finally, there is a soccer team, that is not really great, but has its good moments. It is FC Dallas.

Personally, my favorite sport is soccer and my favorite team in the world is 'la U' (from Peru) and the 'Barcelona FC'.

If you created a hero, how would he/she be? Si crearas un heroe, como seria el o ella?

I am very curious to read some comments for this post. I am positive they will be very interesting. We have been talking in class about the ideal of a hero and reviewing some details of different ones. The stereotype of the superhero is Superman because he was the first one to be created in 1,932 (by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superman).

The stereotype of an archer is the English Robin Hood and most people remember his fights for the rights of poor people (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robin_hood).

The greatest hero of all times (in my opinion) was Hercules, son of Zeus. Of course, his stories are also legends from Greek Mythology (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hercules), but he is still fascinating.
Another incredible figure was William Tell, who fought for Switzerland in the early 14th century (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Tell).
Repeating the question that works as a tittle for this post... if you would have to create a hero, how would you name him/her? What characteristics would he/she have? Any special virtues? Any powers? Why would he/she be special? Tell me about your hero!

Tengo muchisima curiosidad por leer los comentarios de este tema. Estoy seguro que van a ser muy interesantes. Hemos venido conversando en clase acerca del ideal de un heroe y tambien hemnos venido revisando distintos detalles de varios de ellos. El estereotipo del superheroe por excelencia es Superman, puesto que fue el primero en ser creado (por Jerry Siegel y Joe Shuster en 1 932... http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superman).

After a long week, that included TAKS and a lot of pressure, we have to come to school only for 5 more days. On Friday the 14th, Irving ISD starts officially the Spring Break and a whole week relax. Vacations are always welcome, right!?!? However, here - in the 4th grade group - we expect EVERYONE to still dedicate in a dayly basis a few minutes to read a good book.

The question is... what will you do or you want to do during Spring Break?

On Wednesday, March the 5th, all 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders in Texas are taking the State tests called TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knoweldege Skills). Our Fantastic 4th Graders will be taking the Writing portion of this exam. This includes 28 questions where the students will need to edit and correct sentences from different stories. After that, they will write an interesting story of 2 pages (or 1 and a half) following the prompt will be given to them.

El miercoles 5 de marzo, todos los estudiantes de tercer,cuarto y quinto grados de Texas tomaran los esxamenes del estado (TAKS). Nuestros fantasticos chicos del cuarto grado se dedicaran a la parte de escritura. Incluye 28 preguntas donde ellos deberan editar y corregir oraciones de distintas historias. What is your favorite Greek Myth? Cual es tu mito griego favorito?

One of my personal delights is to read anything that is related with Greek Mythology. I use it every year in my elementary classes and I feel my kids usually fall in love with those stories as well. This school year, we have about the most incredible heroes, such as Hercules, Perseus, Theseus or Jason. Divine figures like Zeus, Hera, Ares, Hades, Poseidon and a long etc. were known too. We watched some classic movies like 'Clash of the Titans' and 'Jason & the Argonauts'.

Now, students, would you share with us what your favorite Greek Myth is?

Personalmente, uno de mis mas grandes placeres ha sido siempre leer todo lo relacionado a la mitologia griega. Me gusta usarla cada anho en mis salones de primaria y siento que mis estudiantes llegan a quererla como yo. Como siempre, esta vez hemos venido leyendo sobre los heroes mas alucinantes, como Hercules, Perseo, Teseo o Jason. Ademas, las figuras divinas como Zeus, Hera, Hades, Poseidon y otros fueron revisados tambien. Oh, y hemos visto peliculas durante la hora de almuerzo.

Today, the 4th graders want to dedicate a few words to all their awesome writing buddies. We are extremely thankful that the great teachers at J O Davis Elementary wanted to help them to improve their skills and to develop their own styles. We are so looking forward to get only 4s and 3s at the Writing TAKS.
